Become A Paid Freelance Photographer As A Kid

You'd like to make money doing something productive and fun.

You hate mowing lawns and walking dogs isn't exactly the sweetest-smelling job on the planet.

So, how can you put your creative mind to use? What's an exciting way to fill your pockets without having to endure back-breaking work?

One advantage of being a kid is that you'll usually have some type of gadget that does the amazing: takes pictures.

We are living in a world that just isn't the same as it was 20+ years ago. Nowadays, you can turn on your IPod Touch, log into FaceTime and have face-to-face conversations with people from across the country. Back in the 90s, this type of technology would be considered a miracle. Even more amazing is the fact that you can make money with this technology at any age.

How? By becoming a freelance photographer.

The sad part about trying to make money as a kid is that a lot of the time, employers won't accept you based on your age because they fear your lack of experience. So, sometimes you'll have to find ways to earn cash on your own. Luckily, that can be pretty easy with a camera. The cool thing is, you don't even have to be a pro to make money taking pictures. There are amateurs making hundreds of dollars a day taking pictures and you can, too!

Getting Started

A great way to begin is by doing free portraits of people: friends and close relatives, for instance (examples of portraits). Once you get good at it, other people may start asking you to do portraits of them. When that happens, you can start charging small fees for your services.

Also: check out local sports areas (e.g. soccer, football, baseball ect) and start taking a bunch of photos during games. Have them developed and try selling them to the players (who will almost certainly buy if the pictures look good enough).

Finding your niche is also important when becoming a freelance photographer, so you should try to take pictures as often as you can - snap photographs of parties, kids, families, birds...everything until you can figure out your photography style.

Marketing

Get your name out! Try seeing if your local newspaper has a "Teen Section" and contact them to see if you can submit your photos. Sometimes, you can sell your pictures anywhere from $25-$50.

Another great way to gain experience with photography and market your service is by offering to help with taking pictures for your school's yearbook, newspaper, ect. You probably aren't going to get paid, but it will certainly help with your career as a photographer.

Make a portfolio using your BEST pictures! Starting a blog is a great way to show off your photography skills, especially since there are so many templates created for just that purpose! People won't even consider you for a job if they don't know how well you can take pictures. Starting a blog is free and easy. Plus, it makes you look more professional when you can give someone a site that they can check out to see your work. Some great blog sites to consider:

- Blogspot
- Wordpress
- Tumblr

Becoming a freelance photographer is a great way to have fun and make money at the same time. With the right tools and the right attitude, you're sure to be successful.
